Membrane Separation Systems / Reverse Osmosis
Overview
Membranes in any membrane separation system are the heart of the plant and the process. The performance of an RO / UF membrane can be impaired by impurities that foul the membrane suface during operation. These foulants/impurities can foul the membrane and cause loss in production of clean water and hence reduce overall plant efficiency.
Fouling is attributed to (1) Scaling due to mineral deposits, (2) Fouling of suspended solids (3) microbial fouling or development of biofilm due to growth of bacteria in the system.
The performance of an RO plant can be improved by

Antiscalants
Based on the solubility of some salts, these tend to deposit on membranes when water passes through the membrane surface. These salts precipitate on the surface causing fouling and hence affect output.

Membrane Cleaners
A corrective and preventive membrane program of an RO plant must use high performance membrane cleaners. Usually membrane cleaning is implemented when operating parameters, flux, conductivity or ∆P ( pressure differential) change siginificantly. It is advisable to clean at an early stage of fouling because foulants may be difficult to clean later or the damage may be permanent to the membrane.

Biocidal Control
Non-oxidizing biocides are used either in a cleaning program or during normal operation of an RO plant. Dosage typically depends on extent of micro fouling as well as the frequency of membrane cleaning and equipment downtime.
